Social RESEARCH REPORT

The Hon. Rose Jackson, MLC, Minister for Youth, launched an independent social research report titled Prevention is the Cure - Early Intervention is the key to combatting our youth crisis, on 31 January 2025.

As you are aware, Australia is on the precipice of a significant youth crisis - youth mental health issues are surging; contact with the youth justice system rising by 15% a year; and nearly a quarter of our teens partially or fully disengaged from education and employment.

The social research report highlights:

  • The youth wellbeing crisis

  • Risk factors associated with youth incarceration

  • The scale and economic costs of high-risk, vulnerable young people

  • The value of place-based early intervention programs and required investment in early intervention providers

  • Australian and international case studies of early intervention programs, including the Streetwork Kickstart Mentoring program
