Northern Beaches Environmental Arts & Design Prize Exhibition

Thought-provoking works by 215 artists and designers from across Australia have been shortlisted for the prestigious annual Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design Prize.

Now in its third year, the Environmental Art & Design Prize brings together a community of creatives to highlight our environmental concerns and hopes across the nation.  The works selected present fresh perspectives on our global climate crisis and sustainable life on earth.  They will be on show in an outstanding exhibition of art and design from 4 – 27 August at Manly Art Gallery & Museum, Curl Curl Creative Space and Mona Vale Creative Space Gallery.

Education Week 2023 is 31 July to 4 August 2023 in NSW.

This year’s theme is 175 years of public education in NSW and focuses on learning from our past, celebrating our achievements and embracing the future with confidence.

This year marks 175 years since the establishment of public schools in NSW. Founded in 1848, the Board of National Education was formed and tasked with establishing a public education system in NSW. Prior to 1848, schools operated under a denominational system and were the responsibility of churches.

NEW REPORT: HOW YOUNG PEOPLE ARE COPING WITH COST OF LIVING INCREASES

The Advocate for Children and Young People (@ACYP) has launched a new report exploring how children and young people are coping with the cost of living crisis.
The data found that 34% of children and young people and 41% of young adults are struggling financially. While the most common way to save money is to reduce
spending on personal items and take-away food, young people are also skipping meals and not seeking medical assistance when required.

The interim report is here https://shorturl.at/dptLO, with more detailed findings due at the end of the year.

NAIDOC's 2023 theme is 'For Our Elders.

This week, the Streetwork team and the young people participating in our mentoring program are celebrating National NAIDOC Week. We'll be talking about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, music, traditions, and history and how we can show support for the oldest living cultures on earth.

NAIDOC's 2023 theme is 'For Our Elders.' Its purpose is to acknowledge the deep cultural knowledge leaders bring to their communities.

King's birthday honor list

We are pleased to announce that Helen Banu - Streetwork's CEO - has been awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division of the King’s Birthday Honour List. Her recognition is well deserved. Helen generously gives her time, energy, and intellect to support a cause she cares deeply about - vulnerable young people. Helen was recognised for her services to youth and community health. She has been Streetwork’s CEO since 2013 and, during that time, has passionately advocated and worked with the belief that at-risk youth require support and mentors, rather than incarceration and criticism. From all the team at Streetwork, congrats Helen! #turningyounglivesaroundtogetherwithhelenbanuandjanevincent#orderofaustralia#westandforyouth#youthcharity#youthmentoringprogram#breakthecycle#orderofaustralia

We're hiring! Youth Caseworker

Streetwork has a 6-month contract role we're looking to fill. If you have the skills to mentor vulnerable youth - aged 11 to 18 - through an early intervention and prevention program (called Kickstart), we'd love to hear from you!

During an average day you'll be supporting our Kickstart participants to make positive choices and engage in healthy activities that will turn their lives around. The role can be designed to fit either full-time or part-time employment and the service operates in Sydney's Northern suburbs and beaches.

IT'S RECONCILIATION WEEK

The dates are the same every year - 27 May to 3 June. These dates mark two milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision.

We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation. Together we can build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples', histories, cultures, and futures.

If you haven't had the opportunity, the Uluru Statement from the Heart is an important read.

It invites Australians to walk together to build a better future. https://rb.gy/bxh6m

KEEPING OUR YOUNG PEOPLE SAFE

To thrive, children and young people need to feel a sense of connection, belonging, and safety.

However, the results of the recent Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS) show that approximately 6 out of 10 Australians have experienced maltreatment as a child, and at least half of these are experiencing ongoing mental health challenges as a result.

This new evidence, written for the layperson, is a call to action for us all to make child abuse a national priority. Visit the ACMS website - https://www.acms.au/ - to read the sobering report and to access resources you can share to advocate for the safety and well-being of our children and youth.

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPERHEROES

Today kicks off an important, week-long celebration of Australian Volunteers.

During National Volunteer Week, Streetwork will be sending out its deep appreciation to our team of volunteers who work behind the scenes to help us support some of Sydney's most vulnerable young people.

Volunteers are Change Makers, they are at the heart of most for-purpose organisations and we'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who chooses to donate their time, energy, and skills to Streetwork! We couldn't do what we do without you. You are a power that drives change.

Here's a video link that introduces you to one of our amazing volunteers, Maria Chan, and the role she plays at Streetwork. https://youtu.be/Qpapci8YqqE
