Small, local organisations are the unsung heroes of our communities.

Small, local organisations are the unsung heroes of our communities. They’re frequently staffed by volunteers who work miracles with small budgets and receive little or no government support, but are often the closest and most essential to the children and families they help.

That’s why we’re delighted to announce, we’ve recently awarded 12 new Community Grants to grassroots charities around Australia to support vital programs dedicated to improving the lives of little dragons who are experiencing physical, social or economic disadvantage.

Congratulations to all our charity partners on their success in our latest grants round Reason to Thrive Inc, The Royal Hospital for Women Foundation, Morris Children’s Fund, National Centre for Childhood Grief, Parramatta Women's Shelter, The Mirabel Foundation, The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation, Little Things for Tiny Tots, StreetWork, Onesight Foundation, Lifeline Broken Hill Country to Coast, First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation.

Peter Hobbs, OAM. - IWD2022

StreetWork was founded in 1980 by Peter Hobbs, OAM on the belief that youth mentors should be accessible to young people.   Our trained youth caseworkers meet the at-risk young people in our program in parks and cafes, outside - in the street – rather than an office. That's why we are called 'StreetWork.'

Watch Peter stand with StreetWork in support of gender diversity and share his wish for an inclusive world 'where young women can reach their full potential'.

"Gender equality is important to me and the youth that StreetWork supports because it means that all genders have equal rights, opportunities and responsibilities. It also prevents violence against women and young girls, and makes our society a safer and healthier place" Joanne Phua, StreetWork's Corporate Sponsorship Team Volunteer.

Shaun’s storY

Shaun – aged 16 – was recently referred to StreetWork’s Kickstart Mentoring program which specialises in early intervention and goal setting.  He’d been suspended from school and was struggling with substance and alcohol misuse.

During weekly meetings with his StreetWork Youth Case Worker, Shaun identified two personal goals - he wanted to go back to school and get a part time job.

Shaun’s Youth Case Worker supported him to connect with a local drug and alcohol counselling agency.  As a result, Sean’s health and fitness improved and he became more confident in his decision making skills.  He returned to school and completed Year 10.

Shaun is now enrolled in a job readiness course and is preparing for carpentry apprenticeship at his local TAFE.

donation of 200 RATS to StreetWork

As part of our ‘Giving Back’ program during January and into February, TurnKey Promotions has donated 200 Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) to StreetWork.  TurnKey Promotion sets aside a portion of their sales every month so that they can give back to the beautiful community through the incredible efforts of the team at StreetWork.

StreetWork's purpose is to support vulnerable young people aged 11 – 18 to turn their lives around. Teenage years can be difficult and confusing and the youth referred to StreetWork struggle with mental health (often suicidal thoughts and self-harm), social isolation, substance misuse, school disengagement, youth crime, sleeping rough, and homelessness.

To break the cycle of these destructive behaviours, StreetWork matches vulnerable young people with their own trained and experienced youth case worker, who supports them to set goals to address the behaviours that place them at risk and connect with the specialist youth services that can help them achieve those goals.

COVID has really impacted the work that StreetWork does, as referrals to their early intervention and prevention programs have increased by 35% and they now have a wait list that is growing – fast. At the same time, the cancellation of their in-person fundraising events over the past 2 years, has left them with a revenue gap of over $400,000.

Because it’s more important than ever for the young people to continue to connect face-to-face with their case workers, the RATs will help StreetWork continue to work with vulnerable young people without risk or having to use precious fundraising money.  The RATs will also assist the vulnerable young people to continue to participate in community activities safely and with confidence.

With StreetWork's Social Return on Investment (SROI), every $1 invested is a $16 return to the community, which means this donation delivers nearly $50,000 of community benefit.

We are so grateful to TurnKey Promotion clients that continue to support them and help make a positive difference in a vulnerable young person’s life.

First Aid qualification

When you're working with young people, their safety is always a key priority.

So the StreetWork team refreshed their First Aid qualifications today, to ensure they're prepared for medical emergencies.

Thank you Sefton High School

A big thank you to Sefton High School and their 2022 secondary school prefects for their support of StreetWork.

Working to a ‘whole of school’ approach, the prefect body is co-ordinating Sefton High School’s students, teachers, and parents and staging a range of fundraising events with StreetWork as the beneficiary.

Their 2022 program revolves around supporting members of the young community by 'lifting school spirits'.  The fundraising events cater to student-teacher engagement and the celebration of special holidays.

Like StreetWork, Sefton High School values the positive wellbeing of young people, so in term three, they will dedicate each period of the school day to a different aspect of youth health – social, emotional, mental, and physical.

If your High School wants to be involved in StreetWork’s youth for youth initiatives, raising much-needed funds for our early intervention and prevention program, please get in touch with info@streetwork.org.au.  Every $50 donated funds a mentor session for at-risk, 11-18-year-olds.

Making an impact - with Balgowlah Rotary

Thank you Balgowlah Rotary Club for raising funds for StreetWork and the at-risk young people we support.

Across the summer holidays, the club's energetic members collected approximately 1,000 bottles/cans per week and converted them to $$$s under the NSW's Government's, Return and Earn program.

Balgowlah Rotary Club’s recycling efforts improved the local Northern Beaches environment AND they funded 600 one-on-one, StreetWork, mentor sessions for vulnerable 11-18-year-olds. That's a double impact and a holiday well spent!

Thank you KFC Foundation f

KFC AUS_YOUTH FDN_PRI-Logo-A.jpeg

KFC’s recent donation to StreetWork means that we can offer 3,000 additional mentor sessions to 11-to-18 year olds, and support them to break free of their risk-taking behaviours.

Sarah Collier - KFC Australia, Social Impact and Media Relations – said of the donation “with around 3/4s of common mental health problems emerging before the age of 25, our youth are under more pressure than ever.  Couple this with the fact they’ve faced two ‘once in a lifetime’ events in their lives, there’s never been more need to support StreetWork and the mental wellbeing of young Australians”.

The KFC Youth Foundation’s donation to Streetwork will give our young people the confidence and mental wellbeing skills that they need  to live their best life.  #turningyounglivesaround together with KFC Foundation  #youthmentalwellbeing

Waratah Education Foundation

A big thank you to Waratah Education Foundation for their support of StreetWork.

Waratah Education Foundation.jpg

Across the next two years the foundation’s generous grant will allow StreetWork to support vulnerable young people to return to school and re-engage with their education.  The 1,600 mentoring sessions funded by the foundation’s grant will make a meaningful and lasting difference to young lives.  “Education plays a vital role in economic empowerment and the transition to meaningful work” says Helen Banu StreetWork’s CEO.

When asked why the foundation chose StreetWork, Geraldine Campbell, CEO of Waratah Education Foundation explained,  “We selected StreetWork because their education outcomes are very much aligned to our goals.  Waratah Education Foundation’s priority is around breaking the cycle of destructive behaviours that result in young people leaving school early and limiting their potential to grow, develop and live their best life ”.

Westpac Foundation supporting StreetWork's youth

Thank you Westpac Foundation for your generous and continued support of StreetWork.

The Westpac Foundation's most recent grant means that we are able to offer 2,000 additional mentor sessions to vulnerable young people aged 11 to 18 years.

Westpac Foundation is a charitable organisation that has been helping people for the past 140 years.

The foundation provides funding to help social enterprises and community organisations taking a fresh approach to complex social issues and creating jobs and opportunities for those who need it most.

Free webinar - youth stress and worry

Tonight Pete Slattery - a subject matter expert on how to have conversations with young people - is offering us free attendance at a webinar focusing on handling anxiety, stress and worry in young people. If you're a youth worker, a carer, a parent of an 11 to 18 year old or a young person you might like to attend.

Tonight: 15 September - 7.30pm

We all get anxious, worried or feel stressed occasionally. Some of us worry more than others. And for some of us life throws up challenges that increase all three of the above! In tonight's webinar, Pete Slattery will share ideas about how we can manage some of these hard-to-avoid parts of life. And for those of us who work with or parent young people, we'll look at what we can do to help them manage the hurdles in their lives. Attendance is free, but you need to register. http://ow.ly/TKOW50Ga7H1

Peter works in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America. Among the many resources he has published is ‘Youth works' - a practical book about working with young people. #Turningyounglivesaround together with Peter Slattery #youthcharity #westandforyouth
